‘The Idiot(s)’

The European premiere of Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert’s The Idiot(s) will open FilmFest Hamburg on September 24 and Josef Kubota Wladyka’s Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! will close the event on October 4.

Aimee Lou Wood, Johnny Flynn, Vicky Krieps and Christian Friedel star in The Idiot(s), a historical drama about Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky and his wife Anna during a period that inspired him to write his classic novel The Idiot. While Fyodor gambles away the couple’s meagre funds at a spa town casino, pursues other women and struggles with writer’s block, his Anna quietly holds everything together.

Set to world premiere at Telluride and to have its Canadian premiere at Toronto, The Idiot(s) is Polish directors Szumowska and Englert’s latest collaboration after 2023’s Woman Of… and 2020’s Never Gonna Snow Again, both of which premiered in competition at Venice.

Alongside the two directors, Wood, Krieps and Friedel are among the guests expected to attend the European premiere in Hamburg.

Sundance award-winning tragicomedy Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! tells the story of Haru (Rinko Kikuchi), who loses her footing after her husband Luis dies. When her sister and cousin draw her back into the world, Haru rediscovers her passion for rumba and, with a new dance teacher, the possibility of a new kind of closeness.

US director Wladyka won the directing award at Sundance for the film.
