EXCLUSIVE: Films Boutique has boarded sales on Gabor Reisz’s new feature Ember végez, which recently wrapped a Budapest shoot.
Set in contemporary Hungary, Ember végez follops Kristóf, a man who finds black mould covering the entire wall behind his cabinet. He starts asking neighbours if they’ve had any leaky pipes; and the situation starts to turn his whole world upside down.
The logline for the film asks ‘which will break down faster – the building where Kristof lives, or the apathy from which he awakens to find himself at the forefront of a tragicomic domestic revolution?’
Adam Tompa, Bettina Jozsa, Rodrigo Crespo and Gyorgy Gaszo lead the cast, with Reisz co-writing the script with Eva Schulze. Julia Berkes produces for Hungary’s Proton Cinema, with Andrea Romeo co-producing for Italy’s All At Once.
I Wonder Pictures will distribute in Italy with Cirko Film releasing in Hungary.
Ember végez will be Hungarian filmmaker Reisz’s fourth feature. His previous title Explanation For Everything won the best film prize in Venice’s Horizons section in 2023.
“We’re excited to continue our collaboration with Gábor Reisz following Explanation for Everything,” said Films Boutique CEO Jean-Christophe Simon. “Once again, Gábor remains true to his distinctive voice, recalling the early work of Joachim Trier through his humorous and deeply human view at the world, shaped by quirky and endearing characters.
“Who would have imagined that the search for a water leak in an apartment building could lead Kristóf to reveal so much about himself — while also exposing the wider contradictions of Hungarian contemporary society?”
