‘Programmed To Stay’

German filmmaker Doris Dörrie has wrapped production in Germany on Programmed To Stay and unveiled a first-look image, with Global Constellation handling sales.

The late-life dramatic comedy continues the Cherry Blossoms and Greetings From Fukushima filmmaker’s signature exploration of human connection, loss and emotional resilience.

After the sudden death of her husband, 80-year-old Mrs. Winkler has withdrawn into a world centred entirely on her daughter. When Mrs. Winkler’s daughter accepts an engagement that prevents her from caring for her mother, a robot caregiver arrives, leading to an unexpected bond.

Angela Winkler, Laura Tonke and Josef Ellers star.

Producers are Michael Souvignier, Till Derenbach and Daniel Mann for Zeitsprung Pictures, co-produced by Wild Bunch Germany, BR, NDR, and Arte.

“With Programmed To Stay, Doris Dörrie has once again crafted a beautifully intimate film that balances drama and tragic comedy, offering a tender and clear-eyed reflection on aging while probing the fragile space where technology meets human connection,” said Global Constellation’s Fabien Westerhoff.
