HBO Max has named Guillermo Farré as its new lead for local original production in Spain, responsible for the streamer’s scripted projects in the country.
Farré joins from Telefónica Group’s Movistar Plus+ platform, where he was head of original films and Spanish cinema, overseeing films such as Oliver Laxe’s Oscar nominated Sirât by Oliver Laxe, Goya best film winner Los Domingos by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and Cannes 2026 best director winner La Bola Negra by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo.
Farré will report directly to Deniz Sasmaz Oflaz, VP local originals Spain, Italy and Turkey at HBO Max.
His appointment comes one month after HBO Max’s previous Spanish head of originals chief, José María Caro, stepped down following a review of its local originals structure.
HBO Max said in a statement that Farre’s appointment “reinforces the commitment to scaling relevant local content with the right creative vision” under the new structure, overseen by the streamer’s head of international originals Sarah Aubrey.
HBO Max added that it “remains committed to premium Spanish scripted storytelling and to building a strong pipeline of future projects with top-tier industry talent.”
Earlier this year, HBO Max signed a first-look deal with independent producer and former Movistar Plus+ exec Domingo Corral, whose first scripted project, centered on the disappearance of well-known Spanish criminal El Nani in the 1980s, is underway, written and directed by Alberto Rodríguez together with Rafa Cobos.
Farré said: “I am thrilled and honored to join HBO Max at such a pivotal moment for the company, following Sarah and Deniz’s vision. Spain is a source of extraordinary creative talent, and I look forward to working with the industry’s most innovative creators to develop distinctive, ambitious projects that feel authentically local while having the potential to connect with global audiences”.
Aubrey said: “Guillermo brings a rare combination of creative instinct and strategic discipline, with a proven ability to champion outstanding local stories. His appointment marks the next stage for our Spanish originals team, as we build on a strong foundation and continue to evolve our slate with a clear and focused vision. We are refining the way we develop and produce local content, supporting distinctive voices and ensuring that every project has the ambition and quality to resonate both locally and globally”.
