EXCLUSIVE: Italy’s Vision Distribution has taken on international sales for Claudio Cupellini’s The Survivor, starring Valerio Mastandrea, about the aftermath of a high-school shooting.
Filming has just wrapped in Italy on The Survivor, the latest film by Cupellini whose credits include hit TV series Gomorrah as well as 2021 feature The Land Of The Sons and 2011’s A Quiet Life.
The Survivor is based on the novel by Antonio Scurati, whose 2018 book M: Son Of The Century about Mussolini was adapted as a series by UK director Joe Wright.
The screenplay was written by Cupellini, Giacomo Bendotti and Antonio Scurati.
Mastandrea, known for his roles in hit Italian films such as Perfect Strangers and There’s Still Tomorrow, plays Andrea Marescalchi, a passionate and attentive high-school teacher, who is the sole survivor of a massacre carried out on the day of the final exams by Vitaliano, his most challenging yet beloved student.
As the sole survivor of the exam committee, Professor Marescalchi is called upon to reflect on the reasons for the killings and to ask himself whether Vitaliano, by leaving him alive, truly spared him or rather condemned him to question the reasons for his survival.
The cast also includes Cesare Hary, Diego Ribon, Alma Noce, Fabrizio Ferracane and Ksenia Rappoport.
The Survivor is an Indigo Film, HT Film, Damocle and Vision Distribution production, produced by Nicola Giuliano, Viola Prestieri, Francesca Cima, Carlotta Calori and Francesco Tatò.
Vision Distribution will distribute in Italy as well as handle international sales.
The Survivor is made with the support of the Ministry of Culture’s Fund for the Development of Investments in Cinema and Audiovisual Media, with the contribution of the Veneto Region (ERDF OP 2021-2027) and the support of the Veneto Film Commission Foundation.
