EXCLUSIVE: Trinity CineAsia has acquired all distribution rights for the UK, Ireland and Benelux to Night King, a Hong Kong comedy drama from the director of box office hit A Guilty Conscience.
The deal was struck with Edko Films and the film is set to open in the UK and Ireland during Chinese Lunar New Year on February 20, in line with its release in Hong Kong. A Benelux release date has yet to be confirmed but is understood to be during the Chinese Lunar New Year period.
It marks the latest feature from director Jack Ng, whose courtroom drama A Guilty Conscience became Hong Kong’s highest grossing local title of all time in 2023, earning more than HK$114m ($14.7m) and winning best film at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Night King reunites the director with actor Dayo Wong, who starred in A Guilty Conscience and 2024 box office hit The Last Dance, who stars alongside acclaimed actress Sammi Cheng of Lost Love. It marks the first time the two stars have appeared on screen together since 2014’s Temporary Family.
Set in 2012, the film centres on the once-glamourous Club EJ, which undergoes a sudden hostile takeover. Wong plays club manager Foon, whose glory days are behind him after decades of success in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui area during a golden era of clubbing.
To make things worse, the club’s new CEO is none other than Foon’s cutthroat ex-wife, Madame V (Cheng), who wants to modernise and breathe new life into their business. However, a powerful conglomerate has been pulling the strings to shut down Club EJ for good, meaning Foon and V must join forces and make a last stand against what seems to be an inevitable closure.
Also written by director Ng, the film features several key cast members from A Guilty Conscience such as Louise Wong, Fish Liew, Renci Yeung, Tse Kwan-ho and Kai-Wa Ho. Further cast includes Wai Lun Yeung of The Sparring Partner and Chun Yip Lo from Time Still Turns The Pages.
“Hong Kong director Jack Ng has a distinctive talent for placing sharp social observation at the heart of comedy,” said Cedric Behrel, managing director of Trinity CineAsia. “Night King captures the spirit of the city’s nightlife — resilient, defiant, and alive to the challenges of the times — and speaks directly to a world facing uncertainty.”
Recent UK theatrical releases by Trinity CineAsia include Bi Gan’s Cannes award-winner Resurrection, Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, Hong Kong crime epic Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In and Cannes Un Certain Regard award-winner Black Dog.
