Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger cemented their status as Oscar frontrunners after they triumphed in the lead actor categories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Hollywood on Sunday night (January 19), while Parasite made history in another category.

Bong Joon Ho’s South Korean social commentary drama became the first foreign-language film to win the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Neon distributes in the US.

Phoenix has earned acclaim throughout the season for his lead role in Warner Bros’ Joker, while Zellweger has similarly enjoyed plaudits for her performance as Judy Garland in Pathe and BBC Films’ Judy, distributed in the US by Roadside Attractions and LD Entertainment. Both recently won the Golden Globe.

Laura Dern and Brad Pitt did their Academy Award prospects no harm with wins in the supporting acting categories for Marriage Story and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. Both Dern and Pitt also won corresponding honours at the Golden Globes.

Fleabag star and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and The Crown flew the flag for the UK in the TV awards, where Jennifer Aniston earned glory for the nascent Apple TV+ platform when she won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for The Morning Show.

Heading into Sunday’s ceremony, The Irishman, Bombshell and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood led the way on four nods apiece. The Irishman and Bombshell did not win a single award.
