Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved and will push the film for awards recognition.

The Spanish-language feature gets its North American premiere in Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13 and centres on a famous director who returns to his home country after 15 years away and casts his estranged daughter in a new project to help her career.

Bardem received strong reviews for what industry sources have called one of the best performances of his career alongside an acclaimed performance by Victoria Luengo as his daughter.

Sorogoyen (The Beasts) and frequent collaborator Isabel Peña co-wrote the screenplay. The film will continue to play international festivals this year and Kino Lorber plans a qualifying run before a theatrical release in early 2027. The Beloved opens in Spain through A Contracorriente Films this week (August 26).

Kino Lorber VP of acquisitions Karoliina Dwyer brokered the deal with of Goodfellas. It is a Movistar Plus Original Film in coproduction with Caballo Films, El Ser Querido AIE, and Le Pacte. Nacho Lavilla and Eduardo Villanueva served as producers.
