The non-competitive section of the San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIFF) devoted to Spanish productions will showcase four feature world premieres and a selection of films that have already premiered at other international film festivals including Carla Simón’s Romería and Oliver Laxe’s Sirât.

The world premieres include two first features: San Simón by visual artist Miguel Ángel Delgado, about a prisoner camp in Galicia during Franco’s dictatorship in Spain; and Silent Struggle by Sara Sálamo, a documentary about footballer Isco Alarcón. Sálamo has worked as an actress in Asghar Farhadi’s Everybody Knows and Pedro Almodóvar’s short Strange Way Of Life.

Mexican director Horacio Alcalá’s Spanish production Fragmentos will also have its world premiere in San Sebastian. It stars Manu Vega, Asia Ortega, Emma Suárez and José Luis García-Pérez in a romantic drama about a couple who travel to Lanzarote in an attempt to save their troubled marriage.

The fourth title to world premiere in San Sebastian is the opening film of the Made In Spain section: The Delights Of The Garden, a comedy by veteran Spanish filmmaker Fernando Colomo who debuted at the festival in 1977 with Paper Tigers. His new film revolves around an ageing painter who enters an art competition creating a new version of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden Of Earthly Delights.

The rest of the Made In Spain section is a selection of features that have already premiered in the international film festival circuit or that have had a theatrical release in Spain. Among them are Carla Simón’s Romería and Oliver Laxe’s Sirât, that screened in competion in Cannes; Berlinale Panorama’s Deaf, by Eva Libertad and Spanish box office hit Undercover, by Arantxa Echevarría. And also the latest work of filmmakers like Belén Funes, Cesc Gay, Julio Medem, Javier Rebollo, Celia Rico Clavellino and Argentinian director Albertina Carri.

San Sebastian runs from September 19-27.
