EXCLUSIVE: The star and producers of Malaysian breakout hit Abang Adik are reuniting for upcoming drama Dead Tide, which Applause Entertainment Taiwan is launching at Filmart.
The film stars award-winning actor Jack Tan and is produced by Sinje Lee and Jin Ong, who worked together on 2023’s Abang Adik, which proved a commercial and critical success.
Dead Tide is directed by Kethsvin Chee and is inspired by a true story from the filmmaker’s hometown. The Mandarin-language feature follows a former inmate who returns to a remote fishing village, searching for redemption for a crime that cannot be undone. When he meets a heartbroken woman, they find love and solace despite their pasts.
Joining the cast is Taiwan’s Moon Lee from Netflix series The Victims’ Game and two minutes of footage will be revealed to buyers at a media launch in Hong Kong today (March 18).
“Dead Tide is a highly unconventional love story and an attempt to explore new possibilities for Malaysian cinema,” said producer Ong, who directed Abang Adik.
It marks the first feature produced by actress-turned-producer Lee’s Kuala Lumpur-based Fast Forward Films. Malaysia’s Empire Film Capital is a major backer, with the support of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). Applause Entertainment Taiwan handles world sales.
The project received the HAF La Fonte Award at the HKIFF Industry Project Market last year. Shooting wrapped earlier this year and is set for a Q4 release. Chee made his directorial debut with 2020’s Hello! Tapir.
