Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel is reuniting with A24 and will write and direct a reimagining of Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts classic that gave Jean-Claude Van Damme his breakout role.

A24 will finance and distribute the feature and Marc Toberoff will produce with Alberto Lensi. Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle serve as executive producers.

Coel, a 2017 Screen Star Of Tomorrow, said, “I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. Let’s Fucking Go.”

Bloodsport marks a third collaboration with A24. David Lowery’s Mother Mary starring Anne Hathaway opens on April 17 in the US, while production is ongoing on Coel’s miniseries First Day On Earth.

Coel will also be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s 2025 TIFF world premiere The Christophers opposite Ian McKellen, which Neon releases on April 10.

The multihyphenate rose to international prominence with her 2020 Bafta- and Emmy-winning show I May Destroy You and also created the Bafta-winning 2015 series Chewing Gum.
