EXCLUSIVE: Myriad Pictures has acquired international sales rights to western comedy The Stalemate starring Ben Foster, Manny Jacinto, Fiona Shaw and will commence sales at the AFM next month.
Molly Conners and Amanda Bowers of Phiphen produced along with Andrew Bosworth and Cari Tuna, and Nicholas Arioli makes his feature debut after his short Coin Operated was an AFI Fest grand jury prize nominee. The Stalemate follows a sheriff (Foster) and robber (Jacinto) who are forced to partner up after their exhaustive chase leaves them without ammunition and stranded far from civilisation.
The cast includes Shea Whigham from Boardwalk Empire, Giorgia Whigham from The Punisher and Tony Hale from Veep, as well as Jeremy Bobb (The Knick), Anthony Carrigan (Barry), and Paul Sparks (House Of Cards).
Foster starred in Hell Or High Water, 3:10 To Yuma and The Survivor, among others, while Jacinto’s credits include Freakier Friday, Top Gun: Maverick, and TV’s The Acolyte. The UK’s Shaw is renowned for her stage and screen work and her feature credits including the Harry Potter franchise, Hot Milk, and My Left Foot. She won a supporting actress Bafta in 2019 for the television show Killing Eve.
The Stalemate premieres at Austin Film Festival on Friday (October 30), and Range Media represents US sales.
Myriad president Kirk D’Amico said, “The Stalemate takes the familiar language of the classic western and turns it into something fresh, funny, and completely unexpected. With Nicholas’ singular vision and an incredible ensemble led by Ben Foster, Manny Jacinto, and Fiona Shaw, this is a highly entertaining watch, and we are excited to introduce the film to buyers at AFM.”
Arioli added, “Everyone, everywhere, knows what it’s like to find themselves in one of those ridiculous ‘…now what?’ situations. Absurdity is global. The Stalemate has a ton of fun exploring what actually happens next, when nobody can win but nobody wants to give up.”
