Louverture Films, the producer behind Nickel Boys and Memoria, has partnered with France-based Cinewax Films producer Jean A. Fall and Martinique-based United States of the Caribbean (USC) Media producer Elora Cadasse on upcoming feature, anime series and audio series Black Caesar’s Revenge.
Louverture Films is funding development of the three Afro-Caribbean projects in one of its larger commitments. There was no further comment from the company at time of writing.
Black Caesar’s Revenge is based on a story by writer-creator Saber about a group of 18th century pirates of African descent forced to take to the high seas after they are abducted from their thriving African civilisation.
The title character, who hails from the Oyo Kingdom (now Nigeria) and harnesses devastating powers from the Orishas gods, and his comrades must contend with slave masters, legendary pirates, traitors, and learn how to navigate the seas and the spirit realm of the ancestors.
Production is anticipated to begin this autumn on the audio series while Louverture and its partners assemble the film adaptation.
Creatives who are currently on board include South African showrunner Amy Jephta, Saber, and writer-director Kensley James, in association with composers from Force de Frappe édition.
Cinewax and USC Media oversaw early development of the project through a Kickstarter campaign.
