EXCLUSIVE: Vertigo Releasing has acquired UK-Ireland distribution rights to Matt Johnson’s Nirvanna: The Band, The Show, The Movie.
The distributor will release the film in cinemas on July 3, with previews from July 1.
The comedy is based on Johnson and Jay McCarrol’s mockumentary TV series Nirvanna the Band the Show, and follows musicians Matt and Jay, who make it their mission to play a concert at Toronto’s Rivoli despite never having written or recorded a song.
When their plan to book a show goes horribly wrong, Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008.
Neon handles international sales on the film, which was produced by Matt Greyson, Matthew Miller, and Sydney Lloyd, and written by Johnson and McCarrol. It debuted at SXSW 2025, going on to festivals including Toronto and Glasgow.
“Matt and Jay’s brand of comedic mischief is an absolute joy to watch, and we’re delighted to be bringing this cleverly crafted and raucously funny film to UK cinemas this summer,” said Taylor Haldane, head of UK acquisitions and TV sales at Vertigo Releasing.
