EXCLUSIVE: Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to Austrian feature debutant Bernhard Wenger’s 2024 Venice Critics’ Week selection Peacock. mk2 is shopping international rights here.
The quirky dark comedy will open theatrically later this year and revolves around the “Rent a Friend” concept prevalent in Japan and the US and was developed through Cannes Cinéfondation Residence in 2020.
Albrecht Schuch from All Quiet On The Western Front stars as Matthias, a confident man available for a fee to fill any social role required. Behind it all, Matthias’s personal life crumbles as he detaches from his own reality.
Producers include Michael Kitzberger and Wolfgang Widerhofer of Nikolaus Geyrhalter Filmproduktion, and Martina Haubrich of Cala Filmproduktion.
Aaron Katz, SVP of acquisitions and development at Oscilloscope Laboratories, negotiated the deal with mk2 Films on behalf of the filmmakers and said of Peacock: “You’re sure to love it; if not, we’ll hire a persuasive cinephile to subtly change your mind.”
