MIFFEST 2025 winners

Palestinian drama ‘All That’s Left of You’ was named best film at the 8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest), while Tunisia’s Lotfi Achour picked up the best director prize for Red Path.

Cherien Dabis, the Palestine-US director, writer and star of All That’s Left Of You, was on hand to receive the top prize as well as the best screenplay award. The film, which premiered at Sundance, follows a Palestinian couple who must face a life-altering decision amid the chaos of displacement and uncertainty.

Achour’s Red Path won both the best director and New Hope award. The Tunisian film, which premiered at Locarno last year, follows a young shepherd who has to take a macabre message back to his family after he and his cousin are attacked by a jihadist group. It previously won best film and best director at Red Sea International Film Festival.

A lineup of nine international features competed for the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA), which was held on Saturday (July 26) at ZEPP Kuala Lumpur.

UK filmmaker Asif Kapadia presided over the jury, which also comprised Malaysian actress Diana Danielle, Hong Kong actress Jennifer Yu, Indonesian actor-turned-director Reza Rahadian (who was also the recipient of an award for Excellent Achievement in Film) and Indian filmmaker Rima Das.

The festival’s lifetime achievement award was presented to legendary Hong Kong actor Ti Lung in recognition of his decades-long contribution to Asian cinema.

For the first time, the European Film Festival Malaysia (EUFF) – in its 25th edition – was held in conjunction with MIFFest, bringing together European storytelling and Southeast Asian cinema.

One of the key highlights was the launch of ASEAN On Screen, an industry programme dedicated to promoting regional content and talents to global audiences. A series of four panel discussions were held on July 23, with speakers including Lee Dong-Ha, the Korean producer of Train To Busan; Malaysian producer Shamin Yusof; Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho; and Azmir Saifuddin Bin Mutalib, CEO of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS).

ASEAN On Screen was presented under the banner of the inaugural ASEAN Film & TV Summit, an initiative of FINAS with the support of the Ministry of Communications to mark Malaysia as a host country chairing ASEAN this year. It is also the 10th anniversary of the formal establishment of the ASEAN community. The summit was officiated by deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching.
