EXCLUSIVE: China sales agent Parallax Films has picked up Tibetan director Kangdrun’s feature debut Linka Linka, ahead of its world premiere in the Asian Future competition of the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival.
The coming-of-age family drama follows a woman who returns to Tibetan capital Lhasa to shoot a film about her childhood friend. As memories begin to pour in, the latter’s sudden disappearance creates ripples to the reality.
It was revealed this week that the film is one of 10 features selected to compete in the Asian Future section of TIFF, which is open to rising Asian directors that have made no more than three features.
”Linka Linka is a gentle yet ambitious film that explores one facet of the lives of Tibetan youth, who often grapple with uncertainty around their cultural identity,” said Cao Liuying, Parallax’s head of international sales. “Its cinematic language thoughtfully lingers on the rhythms of daily life, offering a compelling reflection on what it means to be a ‘typical’ Tibetan in the modern world.”
Kangdrun is an emerging Tibetan writer-director whose work often portrays Lhasa’s younger generation and subcultural communities. Her latest short Orlo With Karma was selected for China’s FIRST Film Festival and will screen at Vancouver this month. Her previous award-winning short films include Linka, Linka and Short Summer In Lhasa.
