Amazon MGM Studios reported on Friday that the sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller earned $12m from Thursday night screenings and early access previews.
The feature is the biggest release so far from the studio’s 2026 pipeline and delivered the second-highest result for an original film behind It on $13.5m in 2017. The numbers are higher than those of 2024 release Twisters on $10.7m and 2025’s F1 on $10m.
Project Hail Mary is forecast to land on around $60m in 4,000 North American theatres, rising to $100m-plus worldwide.
Phil Lord and Chirstopher Miller directed the story from Drew Goddard’s adaptation of Andy’s Weir’s book about a science teacher stranded in space who is tasked with saving Earth from extinction. Goddard and Weir collaborated on the adaptation of Weir’s book The Martian.
James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, and Priya Kansara round out the key cast, and the producers are Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and Weir.
