Participants in the HBF 2022 Script and Project Development Support scheme

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)’s Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) has launched a new scheme to fund the post-production of minority European co-productions, while also selecting 11 projects for its Script and Project Development Support initiative.

The HBF+ Europe: Post-production Scheme will open for applications during IFFR next year, which runs from January 25 to February 5. Applications will be open until April 1; the same dates will apply to the HBF+Europe: Minority Co-production Scheme.

The new post-production scheme is backed by Creative Europe MEDIA; the amount of funding available, and the number of awards, has not yet been confirmed.

“We are constantly assessing the changing needs of filmmakers and always striving to see how we can continue to be a crucial partner for groundbreaking film projects,” said Bianca Taal, head of the HBF.

Meanwhile, a committee of international industry experts has selected 11 feature film projects for the latest round of IFFR’s Script and Project Development scheme. Each project will receive a €10,000 grant.

Titles include Benimana, the debut feature of self-taught Rwandan filmmaker Marie Clementine Dusabejambo, in which a mother and daughter explore ethnic tensions and reconciliation.

13 countries are represented across the projects, including Kosovo through Kaltrina Krasniqi’s Bleach, about a cleaner who considers the possibility of a first friendship outside her social class when she gets a new job.

Krasniqi previously directed Vera Dreams Of The Sea, which debuted in Horizons at Venice Film Festival last year.

In a change from recent years, there will be no Script and Project Development Support scheme in spring 2023, with the deadline for the next scheme falling on August 2023.
