EXCLUSIVE: Production has wrapped in Detroit on Haunted Heist, the horror comedy starring Tiffany Haddish, Karlous Miller, and Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor that marks the second production from Terrifier franchise sales agent The Coven.
Lil Rel Howery directs the story of four estranged friends who reunite at a seemingly typical house. Unbeknownst to them, one friend intends to steal a valuable antique. However the place is haunted and the group must overcome their differences to survive a night of mischievous ghosts. Carl Reid wrote the screenplay and Howery also stars.
Haunted Heist is expected to be ready in time for Halloween season. The Coven represents worldwide rights and is continuing talks with buyers in Cannes.
The company produced alongside Death Ground Films (The Mill, Mr. Crocket), Robinwood7, and Rel Event Productions. This is The Coven’s second production after Canadian exorcism thriller Shadow Of God, which launched on the Shudder streaming service in April.
The shooting scheduled remained flexible to allow the actors, most of whom are stand-up comedians, to make weekend appearances and fulfil their comedy tours. Haddish and Bachelor surprised unsuspecting fans at comedy clubs throughout Detroit. “I loved filming in Detroit,” said Haddish. “History was all around me and there was no traffic.”
Although Michigan state’s 42% production incentive ended in 2015, the producers wanted to film in the region to take advantage of historic locations, production value, and local talent.
“By leveraging our established infrastructure and longstanding relationships within the community, we were able to enhance the production value and authentically reflect the spirit of the city on screen,” said producer Jesse Ford, who produced alongside Howery, Sean King O’Grady, and Josh Feldman.
The Coven’s Priscilla Ross Smith and Kendall Anlian serve as executive producers are alongside Robinwood7’s Feras M. Shammami.
