Screen’s reporter and video producer Ellie Calnan is joined by Dylan Taylor, 18, and Olivia Lawson, 23, who previously participated in a roundtable on Gen Z cinemagoing back in April.
The duo debated whether premium formats are worth the pricier ticket, if bad reviews make any difference, and what social media marketing is actually effective.
“I like [the YouTube show] Hot Ones where they like answer questions about the film and then have chicken with hot sauce,” Taylor said. “I have watched those but usually that’s after the fact or I’ll just watch them even if I’m not going watch the film because it’s entertaining. They’re really funny.”
They also discussed why long release windows make a difference, what the industry gets wrong about Gen Z and whether movie stars still have appeal.
”I think actors are really overused. There are a lot of the same actors playing all of these different roles and it means it’s less immersive,” Lawson said, pointing to the success of Obsession perhaps being partly down to the anonymity of the actors. ”The problem is that we do see the same actors over and over again and then they do the same interviews and then it just get so oversaturated.”
The Screen Podcast is produced by Ellie Calnan, with Wendy Mitchell serving as editorial director. New episodes every Thursday
