EXCLUSIVE: XYZ Films has reported a strong early response on the eve of Cannes to Piggy director Carlota Pereda’s English-language debut and serial killer thriller The Edge Of Normal starring Chloë Grace-Moretz and Rupert Friend.
Deals have closed with Entertainment Film for the UK, Wild Bunch for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, Belga for Benelux, Falcon for the Middle East, and The Film Group for Greece.
Matt Venne, whose credits include Dexter: Resurrection and Test Drive, wrote the screenplay with revisions by Final Destination: Bloodlines co-writer Lori Evans Taylor, based on Carla Norton’s novel of the same name.
Moretz will play Reeve LeClaire, who is still haunted from when she was held captive as a teenager by a sadist. When her psychiatrist, played by Friend, asks her to mentor a rescued survivor, Reeve is pulled into a chilling game of cat-and-mouse that threatens to drag her back into the nightmare she barely escaped.
Production is scheduled to begin later this month in Utah. XYZ Films is producing The Edge Of Normal and finances with funding from IPR.VC. Vanishing Angle will produce alongside Andrew Deane and Ava Jamshidi for Industry Entertainment. CAA Media Finance jointly handles US rights with XYZ Films.
Pereda broke out when her Spanish-language slasher horror Piggy debuted at Sundance in 2022.
The upcoming slate from XYZ Films includes Banquet from The Platform and Rich Flu director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia starring Meghann Fahy; Babak Anvari’s SXSW thriller Hallow Road with Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys; The Trip starring Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Juliette Lewis and Timothy Olyphant, which is currently in post-production; and Gareth Evans’s Netflix action thriller Havoc with Tom Hardy and Forrest Whitaker.
