John Turturro’s Italian music documentary Passione and Sean McNamara’s family feature Soul Surfer will bookend the Cinequest Film Festival, set to run in San Jose, California, from Mar 1-13.
Turturro will also receive the Maverick Spirit Award and joins a list of previous honourees that includes Kevin Spacey, Deepak Chopra, Spike Lee, Stephen Frears and William H Macy.
After the closing night screening of SoulSurfer, the festival will present star AnnaSophia Robb with the Emerging Maverick Award and Bethany Hamilton, the subject of the film who resumed surfing after she lost an arm in a shark attack, with the Life Of A Maverick Award.
FilmDistrict will release SoulSurfer in the US through TriStar Pictures on April 8.
Cinequest was founded by Halfdan Hussey and Kathleen Powell.
