Paramount Pictures will release its Star Trek prequel day and date worldwide in conventional cinemas and IMAX on May 9, 2009.

The latest in a long and successful run of television and film series, the new film in the franchise chronicles the early days of Starship Enterprise Captain James T. Kirk and his crew. Paramount is the exclusive distributor in the IMAX format worldwide.

Directed by JJ Abrams, the film showcases a number of new faces including Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as his half-Vulcan first officer Mr. Spock, as well as established names such as Simon Pegg as Engineer Scott and Winona Ryder as the human mother of Spock. Along for the ride is the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, as well as Bruce Greenwood as Captain Chris Pike, a featured character in the original television pilot. Eric Bana plays the villain.

In a statement, IMAX co-chairmen and co-CEOs Richard Gelfond and Brad Wechsler said, 'Expanding our relationship with Paramount Pictures to include this film strengthens our 2009 slate, and with the continuing rollout of digital IMAX theatre systems, we will be able to offer the fan-base more locations to experience the epic first journey of the USS Enterprise in the most immersive way.'

Earlier today, Gelfond announced he would be assuming sole position as chairman while Wechsler will take on sole responsibilities of CEO effective April 1, 2009.
