Robert Duvall, in contention this season for his performance in Get Low, will receive the 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival’s (PSIFF) career achievement award.

Duvall will collect the honour at the awards gala on January 8 and joins previously announced honourees Javier Bardem, Colin Firth, Jennifer Lawrence, Carey Mulligan and Natalie Portman.

“For nearly 50 years, Robert Duvall has transfixed cinematic audiences with his gritty, intuitive performances,” festival chairman Harold Matzner said. “In Get Low, his most recent role, Duvall portrays a backwoodsman who stages his own funeral while still alive. Duvall gives a virtuoso performance, challenging audiences to understand his character who is caught between myth and reality.” Duvall won the lead actor Oscar for TenderMercies in 1984.

Past recipients of the career achievement award include Cate Blanchett, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson and Helen Mirren. The festival runs from January 6-17.
