This film is awful. Whether the character has any depth in the novel, she certainly doesn't have here. "assured and intriguing exploration", God help you if you seriously believe this.
"Ann feels like Columbus sailing for the New World in miniature", this comment is on a par with the shallowness of this film.
"The film painstakingly goes through the steps it takes to get rid of your valuables, undo professional commitments and close your bank account while preparing to live a life shorn of cell phone, credit cards and mailing address, and through it all Ann feels like Columbus sailing for the New World in miniature." Here speaks someone for whom the choice of quiche for lunch is a pivotal self-defining moment in their live.
"Camerawork and editing effortlessly convey Ann’s physical trek from the urban confines of Paris though Germany and Switzerland toward the title structure in Italy." They don't, classic directionless meandering, study to see how not to do things. (Particularly love the getting on and off trains / buses bit, accentuates the alienation)
"the score is an essential, completely integrated character" Let's have a rainy night with cellos and pizz. There wasn't any be-bop mind, so I guess it just falls short of perfection.
Decent piano music(the repeated snippet), but she needs to knuckle down and get a few grants if she's serious about this aspect of her career.
