The second annual Gopo Awards, celebrating the best of Romanian cinema, will take place in Bucharest on Monday night.

The gala, presented with the support of the National Film Centre, is organized by Romanian Film Promotion, the organization behind the Transylvania International Film Festival.

Cristian Mungiu's Cannes Palme d'Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days has eight nominations including best film and best director as does California Dreamin', the last film from Cristian Nemescu who died in a car accident before the film was completed. It nevertheless screened at Cannes last year and won the Un Certain Regard prize.

Nominees for best European movie of the year are Gela Babluani's 13 Tzameti, Michel Gondry's The Science Of Sleep, Emanuele Crialiese's The Golden Door and Tom Tykwer's Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer.

A lifetime achievement award will be presented to local comedy star Jean Constantin who has the lead role in Romanian-Czech co-production Roming directed by Jiri Vejdelek last year.

Among the special guests at the awards ceremony will be Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux and Romanian-born, Paris-based film-maker Radu Mihaileanu.
