Sean Penn will receive BAFTA/LA's most prestigious honour when he collects the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award For Excellence In Film at the 2008 BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards on November 6 in Los Angeles.

Penn won the lead actor Oscar for Mystic River and is expected to figure in this season's awards race for his portrayal as the slain gay San Francisco official Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant's Milk, which Focus Features will release on November 26.

'As a celebrated actor, director and producer, Sean has become a film icon over the past three decades,' BAFTA/LA chairman Peter Morris said. 'The roles and subject matter he chooses to tackle as a film-maker are both challenging and inspiring to audiences worldwide.'
