Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer opened top as expected on an estimated $57.4m that marginally beat its predecessor's $56.1m debut two years ago.

Weekend box office dropped against the same period last year for the third consecutive weekend as the top 12 films combined for $138.8m, down 4% from 2006.

Warner Bros' Ocean's Thirteen fell to second place on $19.1m for $69.8m after two weekends, while Warner Bros' family film Nancy Drew opened in seventh on a lacklustre $7.1m.

Universal's comedy Knocked Up is holding up well in third place on $90.5m after three weekends.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End ranks fourth and added $12m for $273.8m in its fourth weekend. Shrek The Third stands at $297.2m after five and ranks sixth. Spider-Man 3 has grossed $330m after seven and ranks 10th.

The Weinstein Company's thriller DOA: Dead On Arrival opened in limited release on $232,000. Company sources stressed the film is primarily targeted at the home entertainment market.

Next weekend's wide releases are: Universal's comedy sequel Evan Almighty starring Steve Carrell; and The Weinstein Company's horror thriller 1408 with John Cusack and Samuel Jackson.
