Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group (SPWAG) has picked up all English-speaking rights to Liberty Films' sci-fi thriller Moon starring Sam Rockwell.

Independent Film Company will handle all other territories on the title, which marks the feature directorial debut of commercials director Duncan Jones of Liberty Films and was shot at the UK's Shepperton Studios.

Jones wrote the story and Nathan Parker the script about a moon-based scientist about to return to his family on earth who discovers the sinister reality behind his employers' plans to replace him in the facility he has worked at for three years.

Liberty Films' CEO Stuart Fenegan produced with Nicky Moss and Trudie Styler's Xingu Films.

'Moon is a compelling and smart film that represents the sort of quality product which is key to SPWAG's business strategy,' SPWAG's senior vice president of worldwide acquisitions Lara Thompson said.

'Our goal is to provide top-notch entertainment to Sony's various distribution platforms, and Moon accomplishes this on every level.'

Fenegan called Moon a 'high concept film' with 'a very compelling human story at its heart.'
