My Big Fat Greek Wedding has earned $1.9m (C$3m) at the Canadian box office in its first ten days on release through Montreal-based Equinox Films, making it one of the top non-studio box office releases of the year to date.

The romantic comedy, which was written by and stars Canadian comedienne Nia Vardalos, opened August 16 on 104 screens, scoring $970,000 for a per screen average of approximately $9,500.

Equinox plans to platform the release to 25 additional screens on August 30, while the dubbed French version, Le Marriage De L'Annee, will also open in French Canada on 30 more screens on the same date.

The film, which opened through IFC Films in the US on April 18 on 105 screens, will be on 1,450 screens as of Sept. 6. It's currently in fourth place in the US box office chart with a total gross of $64m.

The film is also at number 3 in Switzerland, number 2 in Greece, and has been building its take in Israel for the past six weeks.
