Influenced by Peruvian legends and customs, the second film by Peru-born, Spanish-based Claudia Llosa, is about the impact of the past on the present and the strange and terrible illness called The Scared Breast.
The afflicted are those women whose mothers were raped while pregnant, and is a metaphor for Peru itself. The project has already received backing from Berlin's World Cinema Fund.
'The Scared Breast is about unresolved, violent, personal and collective memory,' explains Llosa. 'But also hope - a buried seed in search of a possible flowering, a healing.'
The project is generating industry buzz, securing some finance from Ibermedia, a fund which backs Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American films. Magaly Solier, who starred in Llosa's first film, Madeinusa, is attached to star.
Spain's Wanda Vision and Oberon Cinematografica are co-producing with Llosa's Vela Films.
Llosa's debut feature, Madeinusa, was the Peruvian submission for the foreign-language Academy Award in 2007. A coming-of-age tale about a teenage girl, set in an Andean village, Madeinusa was described as 'imaginative' and 'Peruvian to the core' by critics.
The film impressed the international festival circuit and was picked up by Wild Bunch. It also took the best screenplay award from the Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana in 2006.
