Fortissimo Films has acquired the documentary I Am Because We Are, which is produced, written and narrated by Madonna.

The deal, for all rights outside of North America, was brokered between Fortissimo's Senior Vice President, Sales & Acquisitions Winnie Lau and Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which represents the film.

I Am Because We Are is about the children of Malawi oprhaned by the AIDS epidemic. Nathan Rissman directs as Madonna shares her own personal experiences in Malawi. Other interviewees include Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu and professor Jeffrey Sachs.

The documentary had its world premiere in Tribeca and will have its international premiere in Cannes as part of amfAR's Cinema Against AIDS event. Madonna will co-chair the May 22 event with Sharon Stone, Harvey Weinstein, Michelle Yeoh, Michel Litvak, Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele and amfAR Chairman of the Board Kenneth Cole.

'We were drawn to this film because it forces us to remember in a personal and powerful way that the tragedy of AIDS continues unabated in places that few of us have visited or know much about. With this film, Madonna opens a window to the devastating impact of AIDS in Malawi,' Fortissimo's Co-Chairman Michael J. Werner said.
