Suburban Mayhem led the Australian Film Institute Award nominations with nods in 12categories, but was passed over for a best film nomination.

The film about an audaciousteenager had its world premiere in Un Certain Regard in Cannes in May, closed the Melbourne International FilmFestival, and finally opens to the Australian public next week.

The films nominated for bestfilm are the relationship drama Jindabyne,drug romance Candy, indigenous fable Ten Canoes and Kenny, a drama infused with toilet humour.

The directors of all thesebest film nominees except Candy - RayLawrence for Jindabyne, Rolf de Heerand Peter Djigirr for Ten Canoes and ClaytonJacobson for Kenny - were nominatedfor best director, alongside SuburbanMayhem director Paul Goldman.

Candy and Suburban Mayhem scored the most actingnominations. Those nominated from Candywere Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish, Noni Hazlehurst and Geoffrey Rush, who ishosting the AFI Award presentation on December 6 and 7 in Melbourne. Emily Barclay, Anthony Hayes, Genevieve Lemon andMia Wasikowska from Suburban Mayhemwere also nominated.
