The Weinstein Company has optioned film and TV rights to Tom Folsom's upcoming gangster book The Mad Ones: Crazy Joe And The Revolution At The Edge Of The Underworld.

The tome chronicles the Brooklyn-based Gallo brothers and their ill-fated efforts to take on the Mafia.

Weinstein Books president and chief executive officer Rob Weisbach acquired North American rights from Zoe Pagnamenta at PFD New York to the book, which will be published in 2009.

'Tom Folsom has created a rich, humorous and intense portrait of the Brooklyn underworld and the 1960s counterculture that will attract leading film-makers and engage movie lovers across the world,' Renee Witt, senior vice president of production and development, said.

Witt, senior vice president of production Kelly Carmichael, and vice president of production and development Eric Robinson will oversee the project for the Weinsteins.

Executive vice president of business and legal affairs Eric Roth negotiated the film rights with Matthew Snyder at CAA.
