Montreal-based Cinemaginaire is set to begin production on Claude Meunier's directorial debut Le Grand Depart.

Meunier, one of Quebec's most revered comic talents and the writer behind the province's most successful television series La Petite Vie, also wrote the screenplay for the romantic comedy.

Cinemaginaire's Denise Robert and Daniel Louis are producing. Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm will distribute in Canada.

Budgeted at $5m, the story follows a middle-aged man who leaves his wife and children for a younger woman and discovers that one cannot start life anew but only bring the old life into a new phase. The cast includes Remy Girard and Marc Messier, Helene Bourgeois-Leclerc and Diane Lavalle.

Backers include Telefilm Canada, Sodec, French-language broadcaster Radio Canada, and federal and provincial tax credits. The film will shoot in Montreal for five weeks into October.

As well, Cinemaginaire is producing a feature documentary to be directed by Paul Arcand, who made the controversial 2005 project Les Voleurs D'Enfance with Robert.

The new film, Quebec Sur Ordonnance which transtates as 'Quebec under the influence', explores the over-prescription of pharmaceutical in the province. It too will be released by Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm.

The company's Cannes title, Denys Arcand's The Age Of Darkness goes on release in Quebec in December.
