Gwyneth Paltrow will star opposite Nicole Kidman in The Danish Girl, the film of David Ebershoff’s novel about Danish painter Einar Wegener (Kidman) who became the first man to undergo a sex change operation in 1931.

Paltrow, who recently wrapped Iron Man 2, will play Einar’s wife Greta in a role which originally had Charlize Theron attached.

Kathy Morgan International is selling the film at AFM, which is being produced by Kidman and her partner in Blossom Films Per Saari, with Gail Mutrux, Linda Reisman and Anne Harrison.

The director is Sweden’s Tomas Alfredson, who made an international splash last year with his child vampire movie Let The Right One In.
