Sony Playstation users to get access to auteur titles, including from legendary French film-maker Agnes Varda (pictured).

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced a partnership with online film library MUBI (formerly known as The Auteurs), which it is billing as a “a never-ending film festival in your living room”.

The deal will provide PS3 owners access to MUBI’s library, which includes around 1000 titles, through a free, downloadable application. Films will be streamed directly to the PS3. Users can watch ad-sponsored films for free, pay-per-view or pay a monthly subscription.

It will launch this autumn in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Iberia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, the Nordic countries and Australia and New Zealand.

Andrew House, chief executive of Sony Europe, said: “We’re projecting right now from 300 to 500 titles as a starting point and then expanding from there.”

Among the titles that PS3 owners will be able to access are all the films from legendary French auteur Agnes Varda (pictured), who attended the launch of the partnership yesterday (May 18) in Cannes.

Varda expressed her delight that “a huge company like Sony” was championing auteur film.

MUBI retains the philosophy behind The Auteurs, set up by Turkish entrepreneur Efe Cakarel two years ago, which was to create a curated online archive of auteur film.
