Canada's distribution business has grown by one, as Toronto-based marketing and distribution veteran Robin Smith launches his KinoSmith Independent Films.

Freshly greenlit through Telefilm Canada's low-budget independent distribution program, KinoSmith will release Brian Friedman's Hot Docs audience prize winner The Bodybuilder And I. Produced by January Films and the National Film Board, the film goes on release November 2 in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Smith, who left Capri Releasing earlier this year to freelance, was hired by the producers of Sarah Polley's Away From Her to shepherd the film. He has service distribution contracts with Peach Arch Entertainment, Seville Films and TVA Films as well as a deal with Palm Pictures for Canadian theatrical rights for Rolf de Heer and Peter Djigirr's Ten Canoes, for which the Canadian grosses represent 25 percent of the North American box office. He's brokering a Canadian broadcast sale of Paul Morrison's Wondrous Oblivion.

As well, Smith is consulting with the producers of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, a $2m horror comedy financed entirely through private equity. Smith says the film is close to signing a North American distribution deal with a major label.
