The Slovenian drama will also screen in Goteborg.

Fortissimo Films has acquired Slovenian drama Silent Sonata, which will premiere at Rotterdam and will then screen in Goteborg.

Fortissimo will screen the film during the forthcoming Berlin EFM. The company will handle worldwide rights on the Slovenian-Irish-Swedish-Finnish co-production outside Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Finland and the former Yugoslavia.

Janez Burger wrote and directed; his previous films are Idle Running and Ruins (both of which screened in Rotterdam).

Producers are Jožko Rutar for Staragara Production and Morgan Bushe for Fastnet film.

The cast features Leon Lucev (Grbavica) and Marjuta Slamic.

The story is about a father and children mourning their wife/mother who was killed by a grenade. Into their desolate landscape comes a travelling Circus Fantasticus. [In fact, Circus Fantasticus is the film’s title in its native Slovenia.]

Fortissimo Chairman Michael J Werner said: “We are delighted to represent this strikingly unusual film. The way it looks at the human condition and how our humanity can survive even the most extreme of circumstances combines a fairy tale sensibility with the bizarre and exotic using unexpected cinematic language.“
