Nominations for the European Film Awards were announced on November 4, with Pedro Almodovar's Volver leading the field, appearing in six of the seven major categories.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley , which surprised many by taking beating the much-fancied Volver for the Palm d'Or, has five nominations, including one for leading actor Cillian Murphy, who receives his Best Actor nod for his performance in Loach's film and Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto.

The Academy also announced Die Grosse Stille/Into Great Silence as the winner of the Documentary Prix Arte award.

Running for over two-and-a-half hours, Philip Groening's portrait of life in a French monastery was commended by the EFA's jury as 'a great film about humanity and our shared European heritage'.

The awards will be presented in Warsaw on December 2.
