20th Century Fox's Planet Of The Apes continued to open around the world over the weekend, bringing its total gross to $47.17m after three weeks of release, while Warner Bros bowed AI Artificial Intelligence in Korea and Mexico, bringing its overseas total to $68.1m from just three territories.
Planet Of The Apes took $2.13m on 346 screens in Australia, making it the second biggest August opening of all-time after Fox's Independence Day and the seventh biggest opening of the year in the territory. In New Zealand, it took $357,952 on 45 screens.
It also opened in Singapore ($0.524m on 48 screens), making it the second biggest Fox opening ever in the territory after Star Wars: Episode 1, in Norway with $298,535 on 50 screens, in Malaysia with $300,162 on 54 screens and in Israel with $242,654 on 28 screens.
In Latin America, it opened in Chile ($252,567 on 32 screens) to become the second highest Fox opening ever and the seventh largest opening ever, while in Ecuador it took $70,300 on 14 screens to become the second highest Fox opening ever and indeed the second highest opening in the territory.
Meanwhile Warner Bros - which is preparing for the European premiere of AI at the Venice Film Festival later this month - opened the Steven Spielberg-directed film in Korea for an estimated $1.3m on 83 screens. In Seoul, it came second to local hit Weird Girl but still scored the biggest Warner opening ever.
In Mexico, AI opened with $1.49m on 300 screens which translates as 399,375 admissions. It came in second to Planet Of The Apes which, in its second weekend, grossed $1.706m on 512 screens.
In Japan, AI is in its seventh weekend and took $1.75m to bring its total to $65.3m.
Warner's family movie Cats & Dogs is now open in eight territories and has totalled $24.96m. In the UK, in its second weekend, it grossed $3.96m from 453 screens making it Warner's second biggest second weekend ever in the territory. The only new territory last weekend was French-speaking Switzerland where it took $50,000 from 16 screens but next weekend it will hit France, Spain, Portugal and Mexico among other markets.
