Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial starring Andrew Garfield as OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman will open in the US through Neon on December 25.

The awards-qualifying slot comes exactly 10 weeks after Neon confirmed it had acquired worldwide rights and declared, “Artificial will compete in this year’s Oscar race.”

The drama about Altman’s late-2023 firing and rehiring from AI pioneer OpenAI will open after the world premiere slot at New York Film Festival and subsequent screening at London Film Festival screening, both in early October.

Neon released a trailer on Tuesday. The company acquired worldwide rights to Artificial in late June after Amazon MGM Studios, which had greenlighted the film, dropped it several months after parent company Amazon closed a $50bn investment in OpenAI.

Yura Borisov from Anora plays Sutskever and Mark Rylance is the influential AI scientist Geoffrey Hinton under whom Sutskever studied at University of Toronto. The cast includes Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, and Chris O’Dowd. Blur frontman Damon Albarn composed the score.
