The Dismantlement (Can)

Dir Sébastien Pilote

Pilote’s second feature after The Salesman (which premiered at Sundance in 2011), The Dismantlement (Le Démantelement) centres on a father who sells his farm to help his daughter. It stars Gabriel Arcand and Sophie Desmarais, who will also be seen at Cannes in Chloé Robichaud’s Sarah Prefers To Run, and was produced by Bernadette Payeur and Marc Daigle for ACPAV.

For Those In Peril (UK)

Dir Paul Wright

Writer-director Wright’s short Until The River Runs Red won a Bafta in 2011. His first feature follows a young misfit (George MacKay) in a remote Scottish community who survives a strange fishing accident that claims the lives of five men, including his older brother. Backers include Warp, Film4 and the BFI.

The Lunchbox (Ind-Fr-Ger)

Dir Ritesh Batra

Hindi and English-language drama The Lunchbox (Dabba), starring Life Of Pi’s Irrfan Khan, charts the fallout after a lunchbox is delivered to the wrong address. Batra’s feature debut came via the 2011 Binger-NFDC screenwriting lab, Rotterdam’s CineMart and the Berlinale Talent Campus. The film’s score comes from Max Richter, whose credits include  Waltz With Bashir and Lore.

The Major (Rus)

Dir Yury Bykov

Bykov’s account of a police officer involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident is his second feature following 2010’s Live!, which won Taipei International Film Festival’s special jury prize in 2011. The Major was produced on a budget of $2m by Alexey Uchitel and Kira Saksaganskaya for Russia’s Rock Films, and co-produced by 1.2. Company.

Nos Héros Sont Morts Ce Soir (Fr)

Dir David Perrault

Supported by Canal Plus and to be distributed in France by UFO Distribution, Nos Héros Sont Morts Ce Soir is set in the early 1960s in the world of wrestling. Written and directed by Perrault, the film follows two wrestlers who swap identities but find it is not so easy to become someone else.

The Owners (Arg)

Dirs Agustin Toscano, Ezequiel Radusky

The Owners (Los Duenos) tells the story of Sergio and his family, who work on an estate in northern Argentina. When their employers are not home, they occupy the house and emulate the lives of the owners. Toscano and Radusky’s debut feature, the project won an Argentinian film institute (INCAA) award to support its production. It is produced by Argentina’s Rizoma Films.

Salvo (It-Fr)

Dirs Fabio Grassadonia, Antonio Piazza

Italian directing duo Grassadonia and Piazza make their feature debut with the tale of a ruthless henchman for the Sicilian Mafia. When Salvo sneaks into a house to eliminate a rival clan member, he finds a young blind girl who powerlessly stands by while her brother is assassinated. Salvo spares her life, linking the two.

Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (US)

Dir David Lowery

Writer-director Lowery’s film — which screened at Sundance this year — pays homage to the style of Terrence Malick (and Badlands in particular), set against the backdrop of 1970s small-town Texas. Young couple Bob (Casey Affleck) and Ruth (Rooney Mara) are torn apart when he is involved in a heist gone wrong, leaving her to care for their young daughter. Lowery also edited recent Sundance success Upstream Color.

Suzanne (Fr)

Dir Katell Quillévéré

OPENING FILM: Suzanne is Quillévéré’s second feature after Love Like Poison, which won the Prix Jean Vigo in 2010. The drama opens with Suzanne and Marie, close sisters who enjoy a happy childhood despite the absence of their late mother. But the teenage Suzanne falls pregnant and later abandons her son and family to run away with bad boy Julien.

You And The Night (Fr)

Dir Yann Gonzalez

Writer-director Gonzalez makes his feature debut with a sex comedy starring Kate Moran, Niels Schneider, Nicolas Maury, Eric Cantona, Fabienne Babe and Béatrice Dalle. It follows a couple who recruit their “whimsical and hypersexual” valet to add some spice to their life, organising an orgy at their home that is attended by various stereotypes such as ‘the Bitch’ and ‘the Stud’. You And The Night (Les Rencontres D’Apres Minuit) was made on a $1.7m budget.
