Oscar-nominated Margin Call announced the arrival of a vibrant new US talent in Chandor. For his next trick, the film-maker sought to repay the favour to Robert Redford, the Sundance godfather whose festival gave him a career-making platform back in 2011. Chandor has gone just about as far in the opposite direction from his fast-talking ensemble debut as it’s possible to go. All Is Lost stars Redford — and Redford alone — in a near-wordless survival tale. Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate will release in the US.

Shoah director Lanzmann, now 87, revisits the Holocaust with this new documentary about Benjamin Murmelstein, an Austrian Jew who was appointed head of the Jewish Council of Elders at the concentration camp-ghetto Theresienstadt, forcing him to work with Nazis including Adolf Eichmann. Lanzmann, who was this year awarded a Berlinale Golden Bear for lifetime achievement, interviewed Murmelstein in 1975 while making Shoah. David Frenkel’s new French outfit Synecdoche produces.

CLOSING FILM: South Africa-set thriller Zulu stars Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom as Cape Town police officers investigating the murder of a former rugby star’s daughter. It is produced by Richard Grandpierre of Paris-based production house Eskwad. Pathé and M6 Films co-produced alongside Cape Town-based Lobster Tree, with Pathé International handling international distribution. Whitaker won the best male actor prize at Cannes in 1988 for Clint Eastwood’s Bird. Salle’s credits include Largo Winch.
