Giant robots invade the international marketplace this week as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opens with 10,769 prints in 60 markets day-and-date with its North American launch.

Paramount Pictures International opens the sci-fi action sequel in 57 territories - including Australia (460 prints), Brazil (524), France (800), Germany (850), Korea (700), Mexico (908), Russia (861) and Spain (594) - on Wednesday (June 24), the day of the film’s US opening. And openings occur in another three markets - including Italy (605 prints) - on Friday (June 26).

The predicted blockbuster - produced, like its predecessor, by DreamWorks and directed by Michael Bay, with Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox starring — made a powerful early start internationally last weekend, grossing $19.6m from a total of 1,815 prints in Japan and the UK.

The original Transformers had a similar release pattern in the summer of 2007, though it opened a week later, arriving in the US for the July 4 holiday weekend. It went on to gross $389m internationally and $319.2m in North America.

A handful of other films get new major-territory openings this weekend, mostly in markets where Revenge is already out or will not arrive until later in the summer.

Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) launches Terminator Salvation with 460 prints in India (not yet part of the Revenge rollout) on Friday. As of Monday (June 22) the fourth installment of the Terminator franchise had grossed $202.8m internationally, $177.4m of it from the territories handled by Sony.

SPRI also opens Year One with 388 prints in the UK on Friday. Having opened day-and-date with the US in two territories last weekend the comedy had reaped $1.8m from international as of Monday.

France gets three new studio releases on Wednesday, in addition to the Transformers sequel. The Hangover, from Warner Bros Pictures International, opens in the territory having amassed $30.3m from international so far. Notorious, from 20th Century Fox International, arrives with 150 prints and $6.3m from international to date. And Fighting, from Universal Pictures International, lands with a $4.8m international tally so far.

Fox International also opens 23 Anos Em 7 Segundos with seven prints in Brazil on Friday and Cobalt Blue with 100 prints in Japan on Saturday (June 27).

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International opens Hannah Montana The Movie in Australia on Thursday (June 25).
