Newcomers and renowned filmmakers head to the Lido for Venice Film Festival’s 83rd festival edition (September 2-12).
Venice opens with Danny Boyle’s Rupert Murdoch bio-drama Ink, while its main Competition also contains films from Werner Herzog (Bucking Fastard), Florian Zeller (Bunker), Lee Chang-dong (Possible Love) and Martin McDonagh (Wild Horse Nine). And artistic director Alberto Barbera’s attempted own goal in programming a single film directed by a woman — May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown — received an 11th-hour reprieve when he added the documentary NAZA, co-directed by Rachel Szor, to the final lineup.
If at first glance Venice lacks the oomph of recent editions, it also allows more space for surprises to emerge. Below, Screen previews all the titles playing across the main sections at Venice, plus previews to the festival’s main sidebars.
