Touchstone's thriller Flightplan stayed topof the charts as it added an estimated $15m haul to raise the domestic runningtotal to $46.2m after two weekends.
Opening in second place on $10.1m was Serenity, Universal's sci-fi thriller starring Nathan Fillionand Gina Torres. Joss Whedon's picture drew very strong reviews and averaged$4,634 on 2,188 screens.
Overall box office fell after four "up" weekends in a row, as the top 12 titlesgrossed $75.3m, down 25% against the same weekend last year.
Tim Burton's Corpse Brideslipped one place to third in its third weekend on $9.8m for $32.9m throughWarner Bros, just ahead of David Cronenberg's graphic novel adaptation A History OfViolence, which jumped 14 places for New Line to fourth on $8.2m for an $8.9m domestic running total.
MGM/Columbia's treasure hunt adventure Into The Blue produced a fifth place debut on $7m, however John Stockwell's picture failed to impress the critics.
Jessica Alba and Paul Turner star in Into The Blue, which averaged $2,509 on 2,789 screens.
Screen Gems' The Exorcism Of Emily Rose fell two to seventh on $4.4m for $68.5m in its fourth weekend. BillPaxton's golf drama The Greatest Game Ever Played, released through Disney, opened in ninth place on$3.7m, drawing good reviews and averaging $3,697 on 1,104 screens.
In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics' awards contender Capote starring Philip Seymour Hoffman took approximately$349,000 from 12 sites, while DreamWorks/Revolution's drama The Prize Winner OfDefiance, Ohio, starring JulianneMoore grossed $155,000 from 41 theatres.
