Wellington Fung has been appointed as secretary-general of Hong Kong's recently-established film industry support body, the Film Development Council (FDC).

One of the co-founders of Hong Kong's Media Asia Group and currently executive director and chief executive officer of Big Media Group, Fung will assume the post on November 16.

FDC chairman Jack So said Fung's 30 years of experience in the local film industry will help enhance its development. 'I am sure that by taking up the post, he would further contribute to the development of the industry,' So said.

The role will see Fung liaise between the FDC, Hong Kong government and local industry in formulating development strategies.

The FDC was established in April this year to advise the Hong Kong government on overall policy and strategy for the short and long-term development of the local film industry.

It will also oversee a $38m (HK$300m) fund, which will back small-to-medium budget films, with budgets not exceeding $1.55m (HK$12m) and employing a certain proportion of Hong Kong talent.
