DreamWorks SKG's American Beauty heads the list of nominations for the Golden Globes with a total of six nods.
The Sam Mendes-directed comedy Beauty beat both Michael Mann's The Insider and Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr Ripley by just one nomination.
All three are in the hunt for the best picture and best director awards alongside Norman Jewison for The Hurricane and Neil Jordan for The End Of The Affair.
The Globes, awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are frequently taken as a lead indicator of honours to come in the Oscars.
But this year reading them is harder than usual; there were no nominations for Three Kings or Topsy Turvy which won with the Boston and New York critics associations awards respectively.
In the drama category none of the titles have enjoyed commercial success to match the level of critical appeal. And of the contenders for best musical or comedy none have had the kind of box office impact enjoyed by recent winners Titanic or Saving Private Ryan; only three were among the record breaking number that topped $100m at the North American box office last year; Toy Story 2 ($208.8m), Analyze This ($107m) and Notting Hill ($116m).
The studio enjoying box office success also scooped the most nominations with Disney picking up 15 nominations. Universal Pictures and Disney's specialist arm Miramax Films had ten each, Paramount seven. All six nods for Dreamworks were earned by Beauty.
In the foreign section the Globes honoured predictable Oscar contenders: Regis Wargnier's East West, Max Faberbock's Aimee Und Jaguar and Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother.
